Elena Bernabeu

Elena began her journey into genetic science with a BSc in Biotechnology at the Polytechnic University of Valencia, Spain (2012-2016), where she discovered her love for computational biology. She proceeded to complete an MSc in Bioinformatics at the University of Edinburgh as a La Caixa scholar (2016-2017). She completed her postgraduate education with a PhD in Genetics and Genomics at the Roslin Institute (2017-2021), where she further delved into genomics, functional genomics, and population genetics, honing in on sex differences in genetic architecture in the UK Biobank. She joined the Marioni group in 2021 as a postdoctoral research fellow, where she is furthering her knowledge of trait prediction, machine learning, and multi-omics. She hopes to apply her skills to further deepen our understanding of sex differences across the phenome (both molecular and otherwise), with the purpose of contributing to equality in healthcare. 

Outside work you can find her pursuing and consuming all things design (be that graphics or interiors), photographing places and people (much to their annoyance), exploring picturesque forests and towns with (questionably expensive) coffee in hand, and enjoying one too many episodes of a thriller on Netflix with her cat in tow.
